The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
