A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
Global terrorist designation and legal charges
Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.
German prosecutors state the network was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.
Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.
Court proceedings and cross-border allegations
Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.
In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.
Regional context and organizational structure
Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.
Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.
Prior legal cases and international reactions
A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.
The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.
“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
