An Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Supported Me Obtain the Job That Changed My Life

In the late 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my travel mate was considering enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had planned a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a big 10-storey building on the Upper West Side known as International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did, and I shared that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I consider applying for a position with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that after dark. The Iraqi student approached me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but right away explained to my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a place where anything feels possible – she declared: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his identity, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in so many ways. I lacked the confidence or self-assurance to contact anyone at an elite institution and seek a position. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university led me to a position in Switzerland where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
